Commissioned by the congregation of Oak Park Unity Church in 1905, Wright’s design for Unity Temple broke with virtually every existing convention for Western ecclesiastic architecture, from its repetitive façade of poured-in-place reinforced concrete—a material thus far reserved for factories and warehouses— to a geometrically proportioned interior sanctuary, devoid of street windows, and filled with light, color and natural references through stained glass skylights, clerestories, and yellow and brown tones.
