Photographing the Airstream x Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Travel Trailer - Part 1
Photographing the Airstream + Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Collaboration at Taliesin West. Scottsdale, Arizona.
Quick intro—my name is Andrew Pielage. I’m an architectural and travel photographer, workshop educator, and gallery owner based in Phoenix, Arizona. And I love Frank Lloyd Wright. So much so, in fact, that I’m on a mission to photograph every remaining Wright design around the world. Pretty crazy, right? But we’ll save that story for another time.
Right now, I want to talk about an absolutely mind-blowing collaboration I was a part of over the past year.
I’ve been photographing Frank Lloyd Wright’s work—especially Taliesin West—for over 13 years.
In fact, Taliesin West was the very first Wright design I ever visited and photographed. Much like it was Wright’s desert laboratory for experimenting with design, Taliesin West has become my own creative lab for photography. Anytime I get a new camera, lens, or want to test out a new technique, I head up there. I’m not sure why, but they keep letting me come back.
Over those 13 years, I’ve been building a visual archive—not just of images, but of knowledge. I’ve come to understand the way light moves through Wright’s desert masterpiece, how compositions change with the seasons, and which angles work best at different times of day.
So when Airstream asked me to photograph a collaboration with Taliesin West, I was all in. Actually, I think my exact words in the first meeting were, “Hell yeah!”
Not super professional, I know—but they didn’t doubt my excitement for a second.
That energy carried through the entire three-day shoot, where I got to bring all of those 13 years of experience into play—guiding compositions, timing, and location choices throughout the project.
In the images below, I’ve paired some of the photos I’ve taken over the past 13 years with shots from the Airstream collaboration, taken at the same locations. Great design—timeless design—never clashes. It was amazing to see the forms and textures of the Airstream and Taliesin West come together in such a natural, complementary way.
